What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical practice that has been around for thousands of years and involves the insertion of fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body. These points exist along channels or meridians that run throughout the body and relate to different organ systems and elements. The practice of acupuncture is based on the idea that the body has an energy force called Qi, which flows through these channels. When these channels are blocked or imbalanced, it can cause illness, pain or emotional disturbances. Imbalances in these systems and channels can be identified through symptoms, as well as pulse diagnosis.

Our bodies are electrical and energetic reservoirs that involve the communication of Qi, blood, lymph, hormones and nutrients between various organ systems. By restoring and maintaining balanced flow of these components throughout the channels we can bring balance to the mind and body, promote overall health and wellbeing, and prevent future illness.

“I have definitely become a believer in acupuncture as my main form of medical care”

What Makes Dr. Marina’s Acupuncture Unique?

Like most Acupuncture practitioners, Dr. Marina received classical training in the common form of acupuncture called ‘Traditional Chinese Medicine’ (TCM), however, she is also trained in and utilizes other unique forms of acupuncture such as Five Elements and Master Tung style. She blends these various styles of acupuncture to provide more powerful healing response.

While Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) acupuncture is great for symptom relief, it can have its limitation with more complex clinical pictures, and its training has become devoid of the spiritual & physical connection. In contrast, 5 Elements Acupuncture works on a constitutional level to address the root cause of an imbalance. This approach works on the psycho-emotional level, treating the whole person rather than just the symptoms.

5 Elements acupucture is based on the idea that the natural world goes through cycles of transformation and change, much like the seasons. Each element- Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water- corresponds to specific organs, emotions and qualities. The goal of 5 Elements acupuncture is to identify which element is weak or out of balance in an individual and to restore harmony to the body and mind.

Acupuncture can be helpful for these
conditions and symptoms:

  • Chronic pain

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Infertility and menstrual cramps

  • Chronic sinusitis

  • Arthritis

  • Chronic Digestive problems

  • Connective tissue and myofascial pain

  • Cough

  • Dizziness

  • Depression & Anxiety

  • Sports or muscle injuries

  • Irritable bladder or interstitial cystitis

  • Insomnia

These are just a few examples. Simply wanting to bring balance to your mind and body, and support your personal constitutional elements so that you can experience more over-all harmony, is a good enough reason!

What to expect from my Acupuncture sessions?

After a 10-20 minute intake Dr. Marina will step out to let you get on the table. Your pulse will be taken to identify organs/channels/meridians/elements that are deficient and need support, as well as to identify unique ‘blocks’ that may need to be cleared.

A treatment may include front and/or back of the body. Based on what you need help with, Dr. Marina may utilize additional therapies such as neural-therapy (additional $45 cost), cupping, electro-acupuncture or gua sha (no additional cost).

Your experience includes laying on a bio-mat during the treatment (at your preference). Bio-mats are lined with amethyst crystals and provides warmth as well as negative ions that aid in increased circulation and decreased inflammation.

“Any part of the body that has been traumatized or ill—no matter where it is located—can become an interference field which may cause disturbance anywhere in the body.”

 Frequently Asked Questions

How soon will I notice results?

Like most things, results are highly individual. Some patients feel better immediately, while others with more chronic conditions need multiple treatments. In 5 elements acupuncture, there is often a series of ‘blocks’ that are cleared, so initially weekly visits are ideal to make substantial progress. ‘Maintenance’ visits can then be every 2-6 weeks!

Will it hurt?

Acupuncture is often painless. The needles are very, very small and inserted quickly. Each patients sensitivity is unique however, and may respond differently. Some ‘normal’ responses to Qi as it finds the tip of the needle can include sensations such as: numbness, heaviness, dull ache, tingling, pressure.

Is Acupuncture covered by insurance?

Sometimes, it depends on your insurance. We’ll provide you with a superbill so you can submit it to your insurance provider for reimbursement of any services your plan might cover. Reimbursement varies and is dependent on each unique insurer and plan selected. There is no guarantee for reimbursement of service fee. Services are payable by cash or credit upon checkout.

If you have questions, please contact your insurance, HSA, or FSA provider for further information.

How much does it cost?

Dr. Marina’s acupuncture visits are 75 minutes, and cost $175. She also offers bundle packages for those who buy 5 or 10 acupuncture sessions up-front, to be used as frequently or infrequently as the patient can manage. A package of 5 sessions costs $670 ($205 discount), and a package of 10 sessions cost $1,250 ($500 discount). If Dr. Marina decides neural therapy could benefit you, this treatment can always be added onto a visit for $45.
